    Swimming Lingo

Blocks:Where the swimmers dive/enter the pool

Bullpen: The area where swimmers report before each event to check in

Deck: The area immediately around the pool.

DQ: Disqualification due to a technically incorrect stroke, kick, turn, finish or false start.

Event: The race in which a swimmer competes (ex: 50yd freestyle)

False Start: Leaving the blocks before the sound of the starter or before the swimmer touches the wall on relay exchanges.

Heat: Race with swimmers seeded at the same level; may have more than one heat per event

Heat Sheet: Heat sheets give you the order of events, list out the names of the participants in each event, and divides them into heats and lanes. So with a heat sheet you can find your swimmer’s name and know when they will swim and in which lane they will be in for each event. You can also see how they stack up against the competition by looking at the seed times.

Officials: Officials wear white shirts at the meets. There is a referee who is in charge of all other officials at the meet, sees to the running of the meet and makes all the final decisions. The starter calls swimmers to the blocks and starts each heat. The stroke judges determine the legality of the strokes and turns.

Psych Sheet: Psych Sheets are read in a very similar way as heat sheets, except they do not have heat and lane assignments. Instead you’ll see each event listed with a list of swimmers ordered by seed time, fastest to slowest.

Scratch: Not to swim an event after being entered.

Seed Time: The time used to enter the swimmer into a meet. This determines a swimmer's heat and lane assignment. Usually, it is the swimmer's best time for that event within the past season.

Time Drop: This refers to any event during which a swimmer takes less time to swim that event (without DQing) than they did in earlier attempts at the same event.
